What is a player prop bet?
A player proposition, or player prop, is a market on an individual player’s performance rather than only the final score. Examples include a quarterback’s passing yards, a basketball player’s points, a pitcher’s strikeouts, a hockey player’s shots on goal or a soccer player’s shots on target.
The sportsbook sets a line and attaches a price to each available side. If a receiving-yards prop is 74.5, the decision is not simply over or under. An over priced at -120 requires a higher break-even win rate than the same over at +100. At -120 the implied break-even rate is about 54.5%; at +100 it is 50%.
That is why line shopping matters. Better prices do not guarantee wins, but repeatedly accepting worse prices makes profitability harder before the game even starts.
